A No-Nonsense Approach To Sexuality and Sexual Education - Spectrum Boutique

Whether you're interested in entrepreneurship or looking for that sexy gift, continue reading our interview with Zoë Ligon, owner of Spectrum Boutique, located in Ferndale, Michigan, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Spectrum Boutique is a sex-positive toy store that has a no-nonsense approach to sexuality and sexual education. Our customers are adults who care about the quality of their toys and want a more curated selection of products.

We sell sex toys, lubes, lingerie, BDSM/kink items, books, sex positioners, and a whole lot more! I used to select everything all on my own, but now Spectrum Boutique has many brilliant minds in the mix. Having sex educators with a ton of industry experience makes selecting items a breeze. We go to several trade shows each year together and spend a lot of time cultivating relationships with the brands we work with.

Tell us about yourself

I started making sexy art when I was in college using old nudie mags, and a friend of a friend suggested that I work at the sex toy store that she worked at since I was open to discussing sex and pleasure. Once I started selling sex toys, I never wanted to stop! A couple years later, I started my own online store, tweaking all the things I always had wanted to change when working for a different company.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of running a business is knowing that you can't make everyone 100% happy 100% of the time, even if you do everything "perfectly" you can't control everything. That's just life! No matter how stellar your business, service, and customer interface is, forces of nature will always leave us powerless once in a while. It's always going to be okay in the end, but it's hard to not take people's dissatisfaction personally sometimes!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Word of mouth is powerful, be an old-school businessperson and talk about your business when the opportunity arises! Don't be shy. I love handing my business cards to Uber drivers when they ask :)
  2. Take calculated risks, playing it safe will make you plateau. And it's ok to make mistakes along the way!
  3. Set boundaries with your work. It's easy to work 24/7 when you work for yourself but checking your email at 1 am will rarely do you any good!!!!
